All possible knowledge or facts in the world

  1. Infinite or Finite?

    • Some philosophers and scientists argue that the total information in the universe is finite, because the universe itself is finite in space, time, and energy.

    • Others argue that information can be effectively infinite, because new facts can always emerge as systems interact, and descriptions can get arbitrarily detailed.

  2. Physical Limits:

    • The Bekenstein bound in physics suggests there is a maximum amount of information that can be stored in a finite region of space with finite energy. So even the observable universe has a finite “information capacity.”

  3. Practical Knowledge:

    • Human knowledge grows continuously. Even if we could, in theory, enumerate all basic facts about matter and energy, new knowledge emerges in science, mathematics, culture, and human experiences. So practically, it’s unbounded.

Summary:

  • Theoretically: Finite if you consider only the physical universe.

  • Practically: Essentially infinite because new facts and knowledge are constantly generated.
